Yıldız Technical University (YTÜ) — known in Turkish as Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi — is one of Turkey's most prestigious public engineering-focused universities, located in Beşiktaş, Istanbul. The institution traces its origins to 1911, when it was founded as the Kondüktör Mekteb-i Âlisi ("School of Observers for Higher Education") during the late Ottoman era. It was transformed into a full technical university in 1992.
Ranking: YTÜ holds approximately the 10th rank among Turkish public universities — a top-tier placement that puts it alongside Boğaziçi, METU, ITU, and the other elite Turkish institutions, particularly in engineering and applied sciences.
Engineering specialty: YTÜ specialises in engineering sciences and is one of Turkey's top three engineering-focused public universities (along with METU and ITU).
Language of instruction: Both English and Turkish options across many programs, with full English-medium tracks in several disciplines.
Structure: The university operates 10 faculties, 2 institutes, and 3 vocational schools.
Notable faculties and programs:
Admission: YTÜ accepts SAT and international high-school diplomas. Admission is highly competitive — strong SAT scores and excellent academic records are expected for engineering programs. Apply at obs.yildiz.edu.tr.
English proficiency: Strong English (TOEFL/IELTS) is required for English-medium programs. Students without sufficient English complete YTÜ's 1-year preparatory English program before joining their main degree.
Tuition (international students): Approximately $1,500–3,500 per year for most undergraduate engineering programs — very affordable given YTÜ's standing.
Scholarships: Türkiye Bursları (full government scholarship covering tuition, housing, stipend, and travel) is the main pathway for international students seeking full funding.
Living in Istanbul (Beşiktaş): YTÜ's main campus is in Yıldız neighbourhood of Beşiktaş, on the European side of Istanbul. This is one of the city's most vibrant central districts, close to the Bosphorus, Taksim Square, and Levent business district. Student rent in central Istanbul typically runs $400–800/month.
Recognition: Diplomas are accredited by Turkey's YÖK (Higher Education Council) and recognised across the Arab world and internationally. YTÜ graduates are highly sought after by employers in Turkey, the Gulf, Europe, and North America — particularly in engineering, naval architecture, and applied sciences.
Important: SAT requirements are competitive. Verify the current SAT cutoff for your chosen program — engineering and naval architecture typically demand the highest scores.
